African Film Press has launched a public box office tracker designed to answer two basic questions: What are people watching in African cinemas, and how are African films performing in their home markets weekly?
Across Africa, box office reporting is fragmented. Weekly reporting is rare; even monthly, quarterly, or annual reporting is uncommon, and most countries provide no regularly accessible title-level results.
The first edition of AFP Africa Box Office compiles 65 reported box office figures for 48 films, tracking weekly and 2020-present rankings.
Across Africa’s 54 countries, we could verify current, publicly accessible figures detailed enough for these rankings in only three: Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.
This lack of regular box office reporting is part of the story the page documents.
It currently includes:
- Weekly Continental Top 10 Films: the leading films of any nationality across the countries covered
- Weekly Continental Top 10 African Films: the leading films identified by their African filmmakers, stories and settings
- Continental Top 10, 2020 to Present: the highest recorded earnings for African films in their main national markets since 2020
The current rankings draw on figures reported between 18 and 27 September 2026. Figures come from ElCinema’s public Egypt box office chart, Fusion Intelligence’s FilmX Cinema Scoreboard for Nigeria, and Box Office Mojo’s South Africa reporting.
- “Red Flag” (Egypt) leads both current weekly rankings with approximately US$183,234.
- “7 Dogs” (Egypt) leads the 2020-to-present ranking with EGP 272,809,045, approximately US$5.37 million.
The portal will certainly evolve. We hope it encourages greater transparency and more regular box office reporting within African markets.
As more countries publish comparable data, Africa Box Office can grow into a complete view of cinema activity across the continent.
