Alice Diop Brings Black Women Artists, Cinema and Performance to Art Basel Paris

African Film Press — October 18, 2026

French-Senegalese filmmaker Alice Diop will present “Geste de Consolation” (“Gesture of Consolation”), her first multidisciplinary exhibition, at the Palais d’Iéna in Paris, France, from 21–25 October 2026, during Art Basel Paris.

Conceived at the invitation of Miuccia Prada and presented by fashion house Miu Miu, the exhibition brings together Black women artists whose work has influenced Diop, including South African photographer Zanele Muholi, American sculptor Simone Leigh, Ivorian choreographer Nadia Beugré, and American experimental jazz musician Angel Bat Dawid.

Diop will also present a new two-screen film installation combining archival footage of colonial violence with excerpts from films that have shaped her own cinematic practice.

The programme includes live dance, music, literary readings and sculpture, including Leigh's nearly five-metre-tall “Sentinel (Mami Wata).”

The exhibition follows Diop's 2025 short film “Fragments for Venus,” commissioned for Miu Miu's “Women's Tales” series, which examined representations of Black women in art and contemporary life.

Diop is also known for “Saint Omer” (2022), winner of the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Admission is free. The exhibition runs daily from 21–25 October 2026.
