Angola Reopens Historic Cinemas in Luanda as Cultural Restoration Programme Advances

African Film Press — October 13, 2026

Angola is reopening several historic cinema and performance venues in Luanda, its capital, under a government programme to restore cultural infrastructure. The Nacional Cine-Teatro reopened on 8 October 2026, Cine N’Gola reopens on 12 October, and the Cinemateca Nacional is scheduled to reopen on 14 October, according to Angola’s Ministry of Culture and public broadcaster Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

The Nacional Cine-Teatro, built in 1932 and designated a historic-cultural heritage site in 1994, reopened following rehabilitation and modernization. Located in central Luanda, the Art Deco building now accommodates multidisciplinary artistic programming. Its reopening programme included concerts, dance performances and events celebrating Angolan music.

Cine N’Gola, inaugurated in 1960 according to RNA, was once a popular cinema and performance venue in Luanda’s Rangel municipality. It played a role in the development of Angolan musical groups before eventually ceasing cinema operations. By 2018, the building had been converted into a wholesale and retail warehouse. Its restoration returns the facility to public use for cinema, theatre, music and other cultural activities.

The programme also includes the Cinemateca Nacional, intended to support film exhibition and the preservation of Angola’s audiovisual heritage, and Cine Tropical, whose rehabilitation is scheduled for completion in December 2026. Angola’s cultural development plan, approved on 14 April 2025, allocated 450 million Angolan kwanza for equipment and outfitting at Cine N’Gola.

Culture Minister Filipe Silvino de Pina Zau has identified the restoration of existing cultural facilities and the training of specialized professionals as government priorities. While the reopenings expand Luanda’s cultural infrastructure, regular film screening schedules, seating capacities and operating arrangements have yet to be fully documented.
