CANAL+ has acquired exclusive rights, in all languages, to the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League across more than 40 sub-Saharan African countries for four seasons, beginning with the 2027/28 cycle and continuing until 2031.
SuperSport will retain the competitions in English- and Portuguese-speaking markets, while CANAL+ Sport will carry them in French-speaking Africa. The French-language agreement is a major expansion: CANAL+'s current 2024–27 deal covers selected Champions League matches, including the first-choice Wednesday fixture and final, rather than every match across all three competitions.
The new agreement is also an early example of what the MultiChoice acquisition allows CANAL+ to do at continental scale. Instead of CANAL+ and SuperSport operating as separate rights buyers in different language markets, the combined group will control exclusive UEFA club coverage across French-, English- and Portuguese-speaking sub-Saharan Africa.
It also supports the reading of CANAL+'s H1 2026 results: premium live sport is central to how the company plans to attract subscribers, reduce cancellations and give customers a reason to maintain pay-TV packages. The company has already credited major football competitions with recent subscriber growth and added long-term rights to South Africa's Premier Soccer League, alongside major rugby competitions.
The rights do not begin until mid-2027, but they secure one of the most valuable recurring sports products in African pay television for four seasons. For CANAL+, the bet is straightforward: European club football will remain one of the strongest reasons for households to subscribe—and stay subscribed.
