Cairo-based film distribution and sales company MAD Solutions is expanding its presence in sub-Saharan Africa, with its international sales arm, MAD World, taking worldwide rights to the South African feature “God’s Work.”
Written and directed by Durban-based filmmaker Michael James, the film is MAD World’s second South African title in partnership with Mojo Entertainment, following Zamo Mkhwanazi’s “Laundry (Uhlanjululo).” That earlier deal was MAD Solutions’ first acquisition of a non-Arab film, as the company began developing relationships with filmmakers and producers beyond its established Arab cinema base.
Produced by Sithabile Mkhize through South African company Maverick Resistance, “God’s Work” follows six unhoused men living in a deteriorating building in Durban, a major coastal city in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. The film combines social drama with psychological and surreal elements and grew from James’s work with unhoused communities in Durban during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“God’s Work” premiered at the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa and later screened at Egypt’s Luxor African Film Festival. Its production partners include South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Film and Tourism Authority and National Film and Video Foundation, alongside Amafrika Films and Mojo Entertainment.
The acquisition gives MAD World a second direct relationship with South African producers and extends MAD Solutions’ business beyond Arab cinema into the wider African market. MAD World is handling worldwide sales.
