Zoey Martinson's The Fisherman — winner of the Venice UNESCO Fellini Medal and AFRIFF Best Director — is expanding its African theatrical run, with releases confirmed in Kenya and Zambia on April 3 and Nigeria on May 15.

The film had its South African premiere at the Joburg Film Festival and opened theatrically in Ghana before the continental rollout began. South Africa and Francophone West Africa are confirmed as next on the distribution map.

The Story

The film follows Atta Oko, a retired Ghanaian fisherman who teams up with a talking fish and three Gen Z associates on a road trip to Accra in pursuit of a long-held dream. Blending sharp comedy, magical realism, and genuine warmth, The Fisherman is one of the more distinctive African features to emerge from the festival circuit in recent years.

The cast includes Ricky Adelayitar (Beasts of No Nation), Endurance Grand, Adwoa Akoto (I May Destroy You), and Princess Fathia Nkrumah. Nigerian comedian Dulo Harris voices the talking fish.

Distribution

Kenya & Zambia — April 3: Released via Century Pictures, screening in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Lusaka.
