"Last Taxi to Kawempe," a new film from Ugandan-Canadian filmmaker Walta Gabriel Busulwa, will have its world premiere at the 33rd New York African Film Festival.
Official synopsis: In the busy streets of Kampala, Viola waits anxiously for her mom to come back from a work trip. As the night goes on and the last taxi fills up, Viola gets more worried. Meanwhile, a tough gang leader named Big Dog plans a big robbery with his crew, including Drew, who has doubts. When Drew gets a strange message, he quits the job, causing big problems. Things come to a head when a taxi gets hijacked, leading to a tragic event that changes everyone's lives.
Cast includes Allan Kutos Katongole, Bwanika Baale Felix, and Agume Mark.
The 33rd New York African Film Festival runs May 1–30, 2026, across multiple New York venues.
